Investigating the Spill Over of Small Scale Manufacture onto Streets: Case of Timber Workshops in Kubiiri, Kampala.

Kampala traders and manufacturers of light industrial products operate along certain roads in buildings that they either own or rent. This study will look at carpentry workshops in particular. This industry in Kampala is one where so many aspects of the production process are being undertaken in a manner that encroaches on the streets. These activities include: offloading of materials, displaying final products and sometimes refinement of pieces of furniture. This usually happens adjacent to workshops that these carpenters have built in the plots they have either rented, leased or bought out. This research looks into why this is occurring the way that it is, in the hope that by understanding the push or pull factors to this apparent spill-over phenomenon of the workshop activities onto roads in Uganda, the research might devise a means to control these factors using architectural design principles and devise apt means for local council authorities to enforce these recommendations.
